This
spiritual and cultural icon shares a history of intensive human
hunting with
the other big cats. In the late 1960's, having depleted the
African and Asiatic
big cat stocks, the fur trade shifted its attention to the Amazon
region, killing around 18,000 jaguars a year
for their much sought-after coats.
The fashion for animal furs may
have declined but the beautiful jaguar is
still hunted. New threats also come from deforestation which
is drastically affecting the jaguar's prey base as well as
fragmenting the population into isolated pockets.
If you adopt a jaguar we can help to protect
these wonderful animals.
