Elephants
are the largest land mammals in the world, living in social
structures organised around females and their calves.
Due to the international demand
for ivory in the 1970s and 1980s, the illegal trade spiralled
out of control causing a catastrophic decline in African elephant
numbers. Poaching caused the population to fall from an estimated
1.3 million in 1970 to just 600,000 in 1989. Today, even though
it is now illegal to kill elephants, people
continue to slaughter these magnificent beasts.
If you adopt an elephant we can help to
protect these wonderful animals.
